Super paper mario is one of the many games within the super paper mario franchise, being the 3rd paper mario game being released in april 9 2007 on the wii. This edition of the paper mario series taking a different spin compared to the previous games turn based battles along with mixing together 2d and 3d elements. And out of all of the mario games has to be one of my all time favorites, along with (in my opinion) finding it one of the most unique games in the mario series out there, both in visuals and story (in fact sometimes it surprises me it’s even a mario game at times).
Super Paper Mario can also be considered one of the more… divisive entries in the series, well I feel like you can label any paper mario game that isn’t the first two games as controversial or divisive among fans, though I feel as though in recent years Super Paper Mario reputation has gotten better, again probably thanks to it’s story. (and also probably due to a phenomenon I’ve seen where people who’ve played games as kids that were given a mixed/negative reputation grow up and probably have a more positive view of said game and thus are more vocal about their like towards it)
How did I find out about Super Paper Mario?
So I should state with I never really got to play this game when I was younger, I didn’t own a wii as the only consoles I had were the xbox 360 and 3ds, and the only experience I had with a wii was playing on my cousins wii u (which didn’t have SPM). How I discovered this game though was through Deltarune (well it at least made me more familiar with the game) thanks to a other certain purple jester (Jevil), I remember seeing some fanart of people drawing Jevil, Dimentio, and I think some other characters interacting, while I didn’t really get into it around that time I did become familiar with it.
It wasn’t until around 2020 that I started getting more into it, because of a certain virus I didn’t really have much to do so when online classes came around, during my freetime I would often find myself watching youtube, alot of it being gameplay videos or videos in general related to video games, it was through there I would learn more about the paper mario franchise and learn more about the paper mario games, and through that find Vinesauces playthrough of super paper mario (which also fun fact, this was my introduction to Vinesauce) and after that it was all over for me I was hooked on this game and it became one of my fixations around 2020-2021. I’m still very fond of the game and it has inspired me in alot of ways, even if its not really a fixation of mine anymore. Super Paper Mario holds a very special place in my heart and I am proud of that.

Song: Probably Memory, all 4 versions of it, while I enjoy the entire soundtrack and think its up there as one of the greatest video game soundtracks in my books I think this song sticks with me, It also is up there in my “video game songs that make me emotional”, I’m pretty sure I cried once because of this song. I also really like King Croacus IV’s theme (both the appearance and battle themes).

Super Paper Mario Movie?
Would have put this in the fun facts section but this deserved its own one since I have alot of thoughts regarding around it. To start somewhere around 2007 the director Seth Gordon expressed a desire to create a film adaptation of the game, with the movie constantly switching between 2d and 3d, though he was never given the opportunity to speak with Nintendo about the idea.
And honestly it would have probably never went through because 1. I feel like the last Mario game I imagine getting a full blown adaptation would be Super Paper Mario (and probably Mario Pinball Land) and 2. Around this time I believe Nintendo was still very protective over the idea of adaptations like this so it wouldn’t likely get around also because of that. Though now that Nintendo is partnering with studios to make movies would there still be a chance for a super paper mario movie? Still no, honestly like I said I don’t see any big screen adaptations of mario spinoff games like that any time soon, at most some light cameos like in the Mario Galaxy Movie. Though considering Detective Pikachu got a movie I don’t think it’s entirely impossible for a Super Paper Mario movie could exist at some point.

At one point there was a set of twenty trading cards featuring various characters from the game released in japan, I would kill to get a set of these
The game also had a adobe flash game featured on the website to promote the game called “Super Paper Mario Memory Match”, you can probably tell from the title but it was a matching game, a download to an archived version can be found here
Super paper mario has a whole manga adaptation to it as well (kind of I guess), in parts of the 37-38 edition of the mario manga “super mario-kun” it would be an adaptation of the story, albeit a more abridged and comedic telling of the story, along with general altered events
In later paper mario games there would be some references to SPM, such as a picture featuring peaches version in super paper mario featuring in paper mario the origami king
There would be a small cameo in the mario galaxy movie, with Tippi’s design being featured in a book in the beginning of the movie (along with the Dark Prognosticus appearing)

Fun Facts
Super paper mario was the first mario game to be released on the wii
The game was originally going to release in 2006 both on the gamecube and later the wii, but as you can tell that never happened
In the US version, Dimentio insults Luigi by referring to his mustache as a shag, though in the Europe release this dialogue was changed, you can probably tell why if you know what shag means as a slang term. Multiple other things like names were changed in the Europe release but I’m just for now going to mention this because it’s the most funniest.
In the english version Dimentio bids people by saying “Ciao”, though in other versions of the game he says “Bon Voyage” or “Au Revoir”
This doesn’t really count but during my research according to the super mario wiki the character Nathalie from Miraculous Ladybug might be a reference to Nastasia due to their roles and being similar. I have no idea if this is true or some editor is just pulling some bullshit reach like undertale fans do trying to compare undertale to everhood but I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets edited out sometime later
Though an actual Nastacia fact is that she’s implied to have been a bat at one point that was turned into a woman (which now explains all the fanon interpretations of her with more vampiristic features I’ve seen on the internet)
You probably know this if your a big SPM fan like me but for some reason in the korean version of the game theres various unused assets that aren’t seen in any other version of the game, said assets being some areas and various sprites of cats
While not stated in the “how I found out about this game” section I also learned more about this game through some “creepy stuff in kids games” videos I was watching around that time, and I think watching those made me more intrigued in the game as well
Special shoutout to my friend and her crossover (and I guess crackship) paring of Rosalina and Dimentio, I’m weirdly invested in it thanks to her and I mean that in a positive way (also if she’s reading this ummm hi?)
So some if you seen the inactive au section of my page, you might already know about my old paper mario au, something about that au was that one of the characters that joined marios in his journey was a fanchild between Mimi and Nastacia (I was really into the idea of these two kissing when I was younger and honestly still am, SPM Yuri ftw), though that character is no long associated with mario and has been recycled into her own character, though to describe her original appearance she kind of looked like mimi but with a ponytail, was a light shade of blue, and had a different outfit, being some long sleeved shirt wish like a skirt with suspenders
I used to make SPM gacha “animation” memes and shitposts on scratch and they are the worst things ever
